The residents and business community in Nanaimo and Lantzville are excited to welcome Telus fiber optic broadband to their neighborhoods. The Canadian telecommunication service provider, Telus announced an investment of $75million to expand its optical fiber networks to these two areas.
With current investment of $75million, Telus intends to cover around ninety percent of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Snuneymuxw First Nation and Snaw-Naw-As First Nation. Deployment work will start from next month. Deployment of fiber optic is part of the plan made by Telus to deliver high-speed broadband services to as many areas in Canada as possible within a short span of time.
The most striking point with the investment of Telus Group is that the company doesn’t wait for returns from its investment in broadband network. Business minded companies delay network deployment to new areas unless they start getting revenues from their previous investments. The motivation to provide telecommunication infrastructure equally and impartially need a great sense of social responsibility and commitment.
Broadband internet services are already available in the areas, but mostly limited to the potentially revenue generating localities. Fiber optic network from Telus could be a solution for both residential and business subscribers.
Nanaimo with a population just above 90k is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Nanaimo is also known as “The Harbour City” due to its geographical location. Nanaimo city was previously known as the “Hub City”, which has been attributed to its original layout design where the streets radiated out from the shoreline like the spokes of a wagon wheel. Lantzville is a coastal community on the east side of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, along the western shore of the Strait of Georgia and immediately north of the City of Nanaimo. Lantzville covers an area of 27.87 square kilometres and has a population of 3,807. BC Tel (British Columbia Telephone Company) was the legal operating name for the telephone company that was in operation throughout British Columbia. BC Tel was one of several regional monopolies in Canada till the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission) decided to allow competition in long-distance telephone service sector in 1985. After thirteen years, BC Tel was merged with Telus to become the second largest telecommunications company in Canada.
High-speed Internet connectivity is mostly demanded by the technical staff who often upload and download data, video and images. Such segment of customers often look into extremely high speed. Fiber optic broadband is the solution that can satisfy their needs. These people are developing data streaming packages where it’s absolutely essential they have that kind of high speed.
Local authorities informed that approximately forty percent of businesses licensed in Nanaimo are home-based and many require the internet for more than emails. Home-based businesses require high bandwidth internet connection to offer reliable and satisfying services to their customers.
The fiber optic network infrastructure will be built to every home but Telus representatives stressed home owners don’t have to sign up for Telus upon installation. They can take their own time to decide to sign up for service. A high-speed Internet connection through fiber optic cables have direct impact over the price of the real-estate property.
In the United States, according to the Wall Street Journal, the addition of a fiber connection to a home can increase the home’s value up to 3%. A recent survey by the Fiber Broadband Association found that residents will pay about 8% more to rent an apartment with a fiber connection.
Telus will start the construction of fiber optic network in April and is planned to complete in 2021. More faster and seamless internet services will rollout to the community neighborhoods over that time.
