The University of Southampton invites application for Research Fellow – Modelling of optical fibre amplifiers
Fibre & Systems Group
Location: Highfield Campus
Salary: £30,395 to £37,345 per annum
Full Time Fixed Term (for 1.5 years)
Closing Date: Sunday 07 April 2019
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 1116919PN
You will join our team in the field of optical fibre amplifiers to work on the investigation and development of wide band optical amplifiers (including Raman, rare earth or bismuth ion doped) for telecom applications. The research looks to double the number of wavelengths that can be simultaneously used for optical data transmission and hence to substantially scale the data carrying capacity of communication networks.
This industrially supported project is a collaboration between the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and a leading global telecommunications equipment supplier. You will be joining a large and successful team within our world-leading photonics research centre at the University of Southampton, UK and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides.
To be successful, you must have a strong background in photonics in the theory and modelling of optical fibres and optical fibre amplifiers and lasers. Ideally you will also have a working knowledge of nonlinear fibre optics and/or optical fibre telecommunications. Experience in the experimental characterisation of rare earth doped fibres and amplifiers/lasers based on such fibres would be also be highly desirable.
You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team. You must hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics.
* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this post, please contact Professor David Richardson on djr1@soton.ac.uk.
Application procedure:
You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
