Lebanese Telecommunication Minister said that the ministry plans to launch 4G services by the end of 2016 but aims to cover all of Lebanon by September 2016. The ministry is also planning to launch fiber optic services as well. For Fiber optic broadband services, the deployment will start with large corporations, until such services reach every town in Lebanon. The Minister had announced in 2015 that fiber optic networks would be installed in Lebanon progressively over the next five years until the country would be totally connected through this technology.
Lebanese government has planned to revamp country’s telecommunication infrastructure. This includes deployment of next generation networks throughout the country. The government makes five-year plan to update telecoms infrastructure. The Minister said that the 2020 strategy is currently under implementation and it will turn Lebanon into a telecoms hub in the region.
Telecommunication is one of the vital sectors that has the capacity to energize other sectors of the economy. Growth in telecommunication sector will boost the country’s GDP. Studies show that an investment in fiber optic broadband infrastructure has contributed considerably to the overall development.
Six international companies had applied to manage Lebanon’s state-owned mobile networks. The results of the bid was issued 08 September 2015. The bidders were Vodafone, Orange, Deutsche Telecom’s Datacom, Malaysian mobile operator Maxis, Turkcell, and the Zain group. Orascom will not be considered as it failed to submit its application on time.
