Aquiva to roll out $11m for fibre optic project
Local internet access provider, Aquiva Wireless will this year invest about $11 million towards rolling out a fiber optic network project from Harare to Plumtree, a senior company official said. Aquiva Wireless is a communication solutions provider that offers satellite and fibre-based connectivity solutions in Africa. The company is a holder of an Internet Access Provider Class “A” license which was issued by The Post and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe in January of 2010. In an interview yesterday, Aquiva Wireless chief executive Blessing Mutenga said the company has enough financial capacity to carry out the project in line with stipulated timelines. “Basically Aquiva is an internet services provider established in 2007. Cambodia, China Deal For Submarine Cable
The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (MPT) signed a 25-year concession agreement with Cambodia Fiber Optic Cable Network (CFOCN), on 2 March to build a landing station in Sihanoukville and lay an underwater fiber optic cable that patches into the existing AAE-1 cable, one of the main high-speed data conduits linking Asian, African and European countries. The project will enable Cambodia for the first time an independent international bandwidth exports, so it is high hopes. CFOCN, a subsidiary of Singapore-based HyalRoute Communication Group, currently has 7,600 kilometers of fiber optic cable in the Kingdom.
100000 Irish premises to receive 1Gbps broadband by March 2017
Irish full-service telco eir (formerly Eircom) has announced that it will connect 100,000 homes and businesses – spread across 200 communities in all 26 counties – to fiber optic broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps over the next twelve months. Preparation for the deployment is already underway, with fiber cables scheduled to be installed alongside existing roadside telecommunications infrastructure. The operator notes that this announcement is part of the commitment it made in June 2015 to extend its fiber footprint to a further 300,000 homes and businesses to reach a total of 1.9 million premises by the end of 2020. Currently, eir says 1.4 million homes and businesses can access high speed broadband in Ireland, while the company remains on target to reach 1.7 million premises by this time next year.
Sterlite goes solo to deploy FTTH, partners with Bharti Airtel, Tata Teleservices
Sterlite Technologies, a Vedanta group company, has undertaken a massive network-neutral FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) deployment in the country and has partnered with mobile carrier Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices to offer services. The company is keeping its fibre infrastructure open, neutral, and network-ready so that any service operator can easily plug in and play its services over FTTH network on a revenue-sharing basis.
