The Industrial Development Agency will outsource the construction work of a new fiber optic network from Northland Communications. The Herkimer County Legislature has approved a fund to the county’s Industrial Development Agency to build a new fiber optic network at the Frankfort 5S South Business Park. The county council allocated $20,000 to the agency for network deployment.
The Legislature approved the money at its April 13 meeting. The Industrial Development Agency had given approval for a contract with Northland Communications to perform the work at its meeting. IDA officials estimate that it should take around 3 to 4 months to get the network prepared and installed.
The Frankfort 5S South Business Park is a designated “Build Now-NY Shovel Ready” site. This site commonly referred to as the “Pumpkin Patch”, is Herkimer County’s newest industrial park. Nearly 200-acres, extremely level, and HCIDA-owned, this site is ideally located alongside NYS Route 5S in the Town of Frankfort. Within five minutes from the NYS Thruway via limited-access highway, it is ideal for either large “big-box” warehouse and distribution purposes or small-to-medium-sized, light industrial projects.
Northland Communications is a local provider of High-Speed Internet, cable television, and digital phone service. Northland serves homes and businesses in Alabama, California, Georgia, Idaho, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington.
IDA officials said that the actual work takes about two days, but the permitting process and paperwork will take time, the reason they point out for the long project execution time. IDA said that a network upgrade from its current Verizon system was necessary in order to accommodate the telecommunications needs of future tenants of the 150-acre site, which is also known as the Pumpkin Patch.
Herkimer County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York with a population of 64,519. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County. It is named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from battle wounds in 1777 after taking part in the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War.
The new fiber optic network is not expected to be ready when the park’s first tenant — Heidelberg Baking Co. — opens in June. Heildberg’s $5 million 28,000 square-foot bread production, packing, and shipping facility is anticipated to bring in about 20 new jobs over the next three years.
CNY Pellets — a start-up wood pellet company — also is considering building a $7 million facility on a 10-acre parcel at the business park.
IDA said the company is weighing its options between the Frankfort 5S South Business Park, a site in Salisbury, and the Manheim Business Park in Manheim. That facility is expected to bring about 20 jobs to the area.
