BT announced that high-speed broadband services are extended to more business and residential customers in Exmoor. Engineers from BT’s broadband deployment team connected 3,700 residential and business subscribers on Exmoor National Park. The super-fast broadband services would be delivered through BT’s fiber optic cables to the customers in Devon and Somerset.
Enhanced broadband services are now available to the communities in Dulverton, Porlock, Wheddon Cross, Timberscombe, Exford, Winsford, Wootton Courtenay, and Withypool. BT uses Fiber-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) in which the optical fiber cable is terminated a few hundred meters away from subscribers. Other technologies to deliver high-speed broadband includes FTTH, FTTB, FTTN, DOCSIS, G.fast, etc. FTTH is a full-fiber solution in which optical fiber cables will be laid from the central office to the subscribers’ home.
BT’s broadband wing Openreach had already connected Bampton and Dunster, which were upgraded during the early part of last year. Lynton and Brayford are also due to be included in the rollout later this year as per BT’s plans.
The CDS (Connecting Devon and Somerset) program has provided more than 280,000 households and businesses in Devon and Somerset with access to fiber broadband, of which about 228,000 are able to access superfast broadband speeds in excess of 24 Mbps. This has been achieved by deploying around 1,250 fiberoptic broadband cabinets thousands of optical fiber cables by the Openreach engineering team.
BT was unable to commit to achieving the target of 95% superfast broadband coverage by the end of 2017 and even by extending the timeline to 2022. The county authorities informed BT that they will not award the £35m public-funded contract for the next phase of the planned superfast broadband roll-out across Devon and Somerset. (CDS)’s decision followed lengthy discussions with BT and BDUK – the Government agency responsible for the national broadband roll-out and 2 separate meetings with the DCMS Minister.
CDS is the largest single super-fast broadband program in England and makes an important contribution to the Government’s national targets for the broadband roll-out. CDS intends to continue to work with BT under its existing contract to deliver phase one of the program to meet the Government’s target of 90% coverage by the end of 2016.
