Jamaica-based mobile network provider Digicel announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire TRES Networks in Curacao. The deal is forwarded to the governing authorities for approval. The acquisition will be subjected to approval, the sources close to the matter said.
TRES Networks is a fixed and international long-distance telecommunications operator and distributor of digital television and entertainment services.
Digicel is a mobile phone network provider operating in 33 markets across the Caribbean, Central America, and Oceania regions. Digicel is owned by the Irish billionaire Denis O’Brien and is incorporated in Bermuda and based in Jamaica. It has about 13 million wireless users.
Digicel’s markets comprise: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, El Salvador, Fiji, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Myanmar, Nauru, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, and Vanuatu
TRES Networks provides residential and business customers with high-speed Internet, voice, and digital services over the island’s first and only 100 percent fiber-optic network.
Digicel said it will work with the existing management team to bring enhanced services to customers in Curacao.
With its all-fiber optic network, Digicel said TRES Networks supports Digicel’s “ongoing focus on helping customers compete by delivering them the most advanced business solutions, in the release announcing the deal.
