Optical fiber cables that are installed in between outdoor environment and indoor environments are termed as Indoor-Outdoor cables. Indoor-Outdoor optical fiber cables are used to make interconnections within and between adjacent buildings. One such example is industrial campus. Indoor-Outdoor cables are designed to be resistant to typical outside plant conditions and are also suitable for indoor use.
Indoor/Outdoor optical fiber cables are not strict in their demand for low attenuation. Due to the less demanding loss budget used for these applications, attenuation characteristics of these cables are not stringent asoutside plant fiber optic cables. Indoor/Outdoor cables usually have flame retardant outer sheath in order to make them suitable for indoor use. Requirements for flame resistance characteristics are not stringent like Indoor cables. Most of them have a flame retardant polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride outer sheath.
