The Minister of Communication and Multimedia, Datuk Seri Ahmad told that the amount is country’s total investment that includes the investments from private and public sectors to this date to build different type of networks to provide broadband services.
Malaysian government’s 11th plan for national development includes plans to ensure broadband delivery to all residential areas in Malaysia. 11th Plan targets for the development of internet access with a speed of 100 Mbps in urban area and 20 Mbps speed in rural areas. The Minister said his government is committed to bring high speed broadband services to all residential and business premises in the country.
Broadband has become more like a utility than luxury. Citizens in a country will get vast opportunities if they are provided with high speed broadband services. Apart from changing the way of life and thinking, high speed broadband services open up opportunities for businesses and employment. Online video streaming, entertainments etc are some of the benefits, while the society can be benefited from e-health and e-learning etc.
Malaysia had invested to build high speed broadband networks in the country. The National Broadband Initiative is a government programme designed to make high-speed Internet accessible and affordable to all Malaysians with a special emphasis on rural areas, children and the poor. The public-private partnership, announced by Prime Minister in 2010, combines the efforts of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Telekom Malaysia.
Malaysia had 16.9 million Internet users, 30.4 million cell phone users and 7.4 million 3Gsubscribers by 2010. Around 33.2 percent which is equal to 2.07 million Malaysian households had broadband when the program was launched. Government had a stated goal of 50% broadband penetration which is equal to about 3.2 million homes, by the end of 2010.
Malaysia’s high speed broadband internet service, called HSBB, provides speeds between 5 and 20 Mbps. Fiber to the Home, VDSL2, Wireless and High speed packet access and WiMax etc are used to achieve the broadband delivery. The second phase of HSBB is under progress. Deployment of HSBB services was announced in stages and divided into three zones. High economic impact areas such the Klang Valley are included in Zone 1, urban and semi-urban areas comprise Zone 2, while rural areas are in Zone 3. The areas of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Bangsar were the initial points of focus for the program due to their importance to business and their high population density.
