Asian countries lead the FTTH/B Global Ranking chart published by the Market Analysis Group, IDATE. IDATE on March 14 presented it’s recently updated the global ranking list of countries that have the optical fibers connected to the home (FTTH) or to the building (FTTB). IDATE publishes its findings for FTTH Council Europe and this year during the 16th FTTH Conference in Amsterdam, the Global Ranking chart and the European Ranking chart were presented.
FTTH Global ranking scrutinizes and selects the countries based on the percentage of households that are connected with optical fiber cable directly (FTTH) or to the building basements (FTTB). In the case of FTTB, the fiber gets terminated at the building basement and the copper cables go to the houses. In order to qualify for IDATE rating, the country should have more than 1 percent of its houses connected with fiber (either FTTH or FTTB). Another criterion is that the country should have at least 200,000 households.
64 countries found their place in the Global ranking with UAE at the top with 95.7% and Jordan with 1.2%.
UAE has the highest fiber penetration rate and the most important point is that 95.7% is fully Fiber to the Home (FTTH) in which the optical fiber gets terminated at the subscriber home.
Seven Asian countries top the chart – UAE on the top with 95.7%, Qatar with 94.5%, Singapore with 92%, China with 77.9%, South Korea with 76.0%, Hong Kong with 73.7% and Japan with 70.2%.
Out of 64 countries with more than 1 percent household fiber penetration, 15 countries are from Asia continent, 32 countries are from the European continent, 3 from Africa, 3 from Caribbean Islands, 5 from South America and 4 from North America apart from Australia and New Zealand.
Apart from the seven Asian countries listed above, the other 8 countries that are listed in the FTTH Global Ranking are listed below;
Taiwan – 47.4% – All Fiber to the building technology
Vietnam – 42.5% – All Fiber to the Home technology
Malaysia – 21.4% – All Fiber to the Home technology
Kazakhstan – 15.2% an approximately equal mix of FTTH and FTTB technologies
Saudi Arabia- 13.3% All Fiber to the Home technology
Oman – 9.9% – All Fiber to the Home technology
Kuwait – 5.8% – All Fiber to the Home technology
Jordan – 1.2% – All Fiber to the Home technology
The oil-rich Middle East Asian countries and the East Asian countries in the Asian continent are leading in terms of percentage of households connected with high-speed broadband technologies using fiber.
None of the South Asian economies could make their entry to the chart. India, the second highest populated country in the world, is unfortunately nowhere in the picture. Though the country’s politicians often boast of a shining economy in the country, it is not reflected in the country’s progress in terms of telecommunication infrastructures. Pakistan, due to its struggle with internal conflicts and Bangladesh with its struggle to stand its own foot also are not in the race towards building a connected nation.
Special Note: Though Kazakhstan is listed as a European country by the FTTH Council Europe, due to the geographical location and cultural links, I have considered it as an Asian country.
