Etisalat Selects Ericsson for 5G Radio Network in UAE

UAE’s incumbent telecommunications service provider, Etisalat has selected Ericsson to deploy 5G Radio network in the emirates. With this selection, Etisalat becomes the first carrier to proceed with the 5G practical implementation.

Using Ericsson’s 5G solutions, Etisalat can address the industry 4.0 digitalization opportunities in UAE, while developing new applications to enhance the daily lives of the UAE people.

Both Etisalat and Ericsson have reached to a strategic partnership for exploring opportunities in 5G business in the UAE.

Ericsson 5G network technology will allow Etisalat to offer enhanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access – among the first 5G use cases – and will provide subscribers with higher throughput and better experiences. For example, new immersive experiences using Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) applications, such as watching a 360° immersive 4K video on VR goggles.

What is a Radio Network?

A Radio Access Network or shortly RAN is part of a mobile telecommunication system. RAN utilizes the radio access technology and the radio transmitter resides connects your communication devices to the Core Network (CN).

Some examples;
GRAN: GSM radio access network
GERAN: Same as GRAN but includes EDGE packet radio services
UTRAN: UMTS radio access network
E-UTRAN: The Long Term Evolution (LTE) high speed and low latency radio access network

A mobile phone can simultaneously be connected to many Radio Access Networks. Such mobile devices known as the dual-mode handsets are common for handsets to support both GSM and UMTS radio access technologies. Such devices seamlessly transfer an ongoing call between different radio access networks without the user noticing any disruption in service.

Typically there are two types of Radion networks.

One-to-many – also called simplex communication is a broadcast network commonly used for public information and mass-media entertainment.

Two-way radio or duplex communication is used more commonly for public safety and by the police, fire, taxicabs, and delivery services.

Low-latency 5G technology will also enhance the daily lives of people in the UAE with particular needs. Ericsson says using 5G and the cloud solutions, people with hearing impairment can receive voice-to-text transcript on smart glasses.

5G will also augment the automation, AI and machine learning services for UAE industries, based on 5G capabilities.

Etisalat has always been in the forefront to test any new innovation in the telecommunication industry. Etisalat invested in Fiber to the Home networks in the Emirates that lifted the country’s status to the top of the nations ranked by the FTTH Council in terms of the percentage of homes connected with FTTH/B technology.

Etisalat’s major achievement in the deployment of 5G was the launch of the first commercial 5G network on C-band in the MENA region in early May 2018. The implementation of the 5G network will help transform an open cloud platform to allow much faster time to install new services to provide superior experience and reliability.
