Telecom Italia says the work is progressing to extend its fiber optic network to the medieval town of Cittadella in the northern province of Padua. Telecom Italia intends to deploy around 26 kilometers of fiber optic cables by the end of 2016. This will allow customers in the connected areas to access the internet at speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
The operator has announced the activation of its fiber optic service in the towns of Avezzano and Ortone in the southern Abruzzo region. Telecom Italia connected around 14,000 homes in Avezzano and 7,000 homes in Ortone, equivalent to over 80 percent of the respective populations, allowing customers to connect to the internet at speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
Telecom Italia had recently announced that it plans to bring fiber optic technology to 84 percent of Italian homes by the end of 2018 thanks to a EUR 3.6 billion investment.
