Penetration Reaches 46.2 Percent in Fiber-to-the-Business Segment

Vertical Systems Group publishes a research report on optical fiber penetration in commercial buildings in the United States. According to the report, the business fiber penetration in the country has increased to reach 46.2% indicating a narrowing fiber gap in the broadband services in the commercial sector. Vertical Systems Group considers fiber-connected multi-tenant and company-owned buildings in the country with 20 or more staffs. There are more than 2 million such establishments in the United States. The growth in the business fiber was spurred by the expanded fiber installations and new building constructions.

The Fiber-gap refers to the unconnected or unlit commercial buildings without optical fiber facilities that readily connect to business network services. Fiber penetration increased in 2015 as telecom network operators targeted greenfield metro areas and mid-size multi-tenant buildings for new installations. Fiber access to network services is additionally being pre-built into nearly every new commercial building across the U.S. Business customers want ready accessibility to fiber-based services for the capacity and scalability necessary to future-proof their networks.

Fiber deployments in the United States have also been showing overall growth. The United States market was stagnant for the past few years until 2015. The competition in the broadband market has been pulling more service providers to install fiber-optic networks. There is growth in the FTTH market segment as well. Recently, Verizon had started deploying fiber optic networks in Boston seeing the potential for the near future.

Fiber is the most widely deployed access technology for delivery of Carrier Ethernet services in the U.S. Fiber is also increasingly implemented to support higher-speed Hybrid VPNs, Cloud and Internet connectivity, mobile traffic aggregation, and emerging SDN-enabled Dynamic Network Connectivity Services (DNCS).

Research content covers a full update for 2015 plus historical data for the period 2004 through 2015. ENS Research Topics include an analysis of current fiber trends, fiber penetration rates by customer segment (Large Enterprise and SMB), and detailed statistics for four building size segments (20-50 employees, 51-100 employees, 101-250 employees, >250 employees).

Vertical Systems Group is recognized worldwide as leading market research and strategic consulting firm specializing in defensible quantification of the networking industry.
