Singapore’s incumbent telecom operator SingTel has confirmed the landing installation of the submarine fiber optic cable SEA-ME-WE 5 (5th cable route of South East Asia-Middle East-West Europe), which spans from Singapore to France connecting many Asian and European countries on its way. The landing of the submarine cable in Singapore was done at Tuas, which is a Western shore city. Tuas is largely an industrial zone located in the western part of Singapore, which is bounded by Tengeh Reservoir, Tuas Checkpoint, Straits of Johor, Tuas South Avenue 3, Tuas South Avenue 9, Tuas Road, Pan Island Expressway, and Raffles Golf Course boundary.
The 20,000km long SEA–ME–WE 5 cable., which has a design capacity of 24 Tbps over a 6 Fiber cable is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016. The latest DWDM technology will be used for transmission. A consortium of telecom operators is behind the deployment of this submarine fiber cable system. The consortium includes major telecom operators in the South East and East Asian countries. The consortium targets to handle the anticipated quadrupling in bandwidth demand between Europe and Asia from now until 2021.

SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine fiber optic cable system is a matchless, PoP to PoP, multi-regional data superhighway and is a technological breakthrough, which marks a global communications milestone.
Designed with the latest upgradable 100Gbps technology, the cable system will provide the lowest latency, further enhancing the diversity and resilience to the heavily loaded Asia to Europe route. SEA-ME-WE team had in the past deployed four submarine cable systems. SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable system is the 5th milestone of the SEA-ME-WE family. SEA ME WE 5 has received strong commitment and support from the associated parties which in turn would help to complete the project successfully.
This project includes 18 international operators, namely: Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL), China Mobile International Limited (CMI), China Telecom Global Limited (CTG), China United Network Communications Group Company Limited (China Unicom), Djibouti Telecom SA (Djibouti Telecom), Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du), Egypt Telecom (TE), Orange, Myanmar Post and Telecom (MPT), Ooredoo Qatar, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel), Sri Lanka Telecom PLC (SLT), Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), Telecom Italia Sparkle (TI Sparkle), Türk Telekom International (TTI) and Trans World Associates Limited (TWA).
The core system of the SEA-ME-WE 5 is designed to span from Singapore to France & Italy in the most optimized route with parties connecting into the core system by branch via ROADM-BU. The system terminates at carrier-neutral POPs in Singapore, Italy & France for cross-connecting with other cable systems, interconnecting with other carriers, and acquire services in a competitive environment. The system has been planned with field-proven DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 100G Coherent Technology.
The SEA-ME-WE 5 cable provides a sevenfold capacity increase along the corridor connecting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe. Construction of the SEA-ME-WE 5 was commenced in September 2014, and the cable reached the Western European shores in February 2016.
Once complete, the cable will connect Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sr Lanka, Pakistan, the UE, Oman, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, and France. Future branching connections are planned for Thailand, India, and Yemen.
