India to spend S$818 million to develop the first 20 Smart Cities
India’s government will provide 40 billion rupees (S$818 million) to upgrade the infrastructure of the first 20 cities selected under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s smart cities program, according to a statement from the Ministry of Urban Development on Saturday (Feb 20). Six cities – Jabalpur, Indore and Bhopal in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, and Jaipur and Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan – have set up special purpose vehicles to implement the government’s plan to promote digital and information technology and best practices in urban planning…..
Fiji communications ministry close to ratifying Sky Pacific licence
Local newspaper FijiVillage claims that the country’s Minister for Communications, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, is close to finalising a new licensing arrangement between domestic mobile operator Digicel Fiji and pay-TV provider Sky Pacific. The permanent secretary for communications and IT, Ewan Perrin, says that the matter needs to be ratified and authorised by the minister, adding that this should happen ‘soon’….
Ooredoo upgrades fibre speeds, relaunches IPTV
Ooredoo Qatar has announced that a free-of-charge speed upgrade on its fibre broadband network is now live, boosting all 50Mbps home fibre plans to 100Mbps, whilst multiplying existing 100Mbps connections to 300Mbps, Gulf Times reports. Huawei, Telefonica complete trials on SDN-based optical network
Telefonica and Huawei have completed what the firms claim is the industry’s first migration of commercial user traffic over an SDN-based IP optical network IP+Optical trial network in Peru. SKT to show off 20Gbps 5G tech at MWC
SK Telecom is demonstrating what it calls the world’s first functioning 5G network at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. Optus and Huawei conduct LTE-Advanced Pro trial near Sydney
Australia’s Optus and Chinese vendor Huawei have announced a live trial of 4.5G technology in which they achieved downlink speeds of 1.41Gbps, with theoretical maximum speeds reaching 1.43Gbps. In a successful trial of LTE-Advanced Pro at Optus’ Gigasite in Newcastle, north of Sydney, the companies aggregated 100MHz (5×20MHz) of Optus’ ‘unique network frequency bands’, while also utilising 4×4 multiple inputs, multiple outputs….
