The wife of Sir Charles Kao, who is the father of Fiber optics will share their life story in Bishop’s Stortford. The event will take place on 13 July, Monday. We found this news in Herts & Essex Observer and would like to share with those interested to attend the rare event in the UK.
It is a rare opportunity for those who love fiber optics to see Mrs. Kao, who will take time out from a short break in the UK to speak to guests of Cafe Scientifique. She lives in the USA with Sir Charles, who has become known as the “Father of Fibre Optics”.
The couple graduated from London University in 1955 and married four years after, before both joining Standard Telecommunications Laboratories in Harlow.
Sir Charles, who is honored on a plaque in the Harlow Water Gardens, made international headlines in 2009 when he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics. At the same time, it was revealed that he had Alzheimer’s disease. Though he can no longer contribute as a scientist, he has become the “Face of Alzheimer’s” in Hong Kong.
His Charles Kao Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease, with Mrs. Kao at the forefront, now educates and raises awareness in the community about the hitherto-hidden disease.
Mrs. Kao’s talk will be a fitting end to Chris Hockley’s time as head of Cafe Scientifique. He is stepping aside after 36 gatherings, with Fred Tingey and Gary Aldam to take on the leadership of the group.
To hear what Mrs. Kao has to say, head to the Charis Centre in Water Lane on Monday (July 13). Doors open at 6.45 pm for a 7.15 pm start. Entry is free, The organizers welcome donations.
Anyone who plans to attend should let Chris know by emailing booking@cafesci-stortford.co.uk or calling (01279) 652006.
