Microsoft to invest in Trans-Atlantic Express Cable.
Marking a milestone in the history of submarine fiber optic cable connectivity between Europe and North America, deployment has been started for Hibernia Networks’ new undersea optical fiber cable system. More than 2,000 kilometers of armored fiber optic cables have been loaded to the cable laying ships. In total there are three ships for laying the cables. Trans-Atlantic Express cable is the first submarine fiber optic cable connecting Europe and North America in more than 12 years. The news got media attention as the Microsoft Corporation announced its intention to invest in the network. Hibernia Express is on schedule for delivering service to high-bandwidth network operators, including carriers, global financial firms and technology companies, in September 2015.
Hibernia Networks has partnership with TE SubCom, who has prepared around 4,500 kilometers of submarine fiber optic cables connected with over 60 amplifiers. TE Subcom has provided the cable laying ships. SubCom is a TE Connectivity Limited Company providing undersea communications systems and services. SubCom has deployed more than 490,000 kilometers of undersea cable in over 100 undersea fiber optic systems that are serving communications requirements around the world.
Trans-Atlantic Express cable employs a 6 fiber submarine fiber optic cable. The cable is designed to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously. Soe fibers are optimized for lowest latency applications while some are optimized for 100X100 Gpbs design capacity. The total design capacity of the cable will be over 53 Terabits per second. Hibernia Express will initially launch with 100 Gbps transmission capacity using TE SubCom’s C100 SLTE platform.
Microsoft has been significantly investing in submarine and terrestrial dark fiber capacity for the past 9 months, by engaging in fiber partnerships that span multiple oceans and continents. In the current deal with Hibernia, ,Microsoft is investing in a cable with each company to connect Microsoft’s datacenter infrastructure from North America to Ireland and on to the United Kingdom. These cables will help deliver data at higher speeds, with higher capacity and lower latency for our customers across the globe.
The first cable ship will travel from Halifax, Nova Scotia to the south east of Newfoundland. The second cable ship begins in Brean, UK and travels to the west of the Porcupine Bank off the coast of Ireland. The third cable ship will start from the south east of Newfoundland and will connect to west of the Porcupine Bank and complete the final splice. The first cable ship will continue in transit over the Atlantic and connect the Irish branching unit to Cork, Ireland. By connecting the UK and North America in the straightest route possible, Hibernia Express will, without doubt, be the fastest route available and vastly improve upon existing cable systems’ latency by at least 5 milliseconds. Hibernia Networks is committed to serving customer needs for low latency connectivity between major city centers and financial hubs, integrating Hibernia Express with innovative backhaul
