Fiber optic networks would be expanded in Castlebar, Co Mayo thus becoming the latest town to receive a fiber optic network from the operator enet. Irish network operator enet will invest 1.5 million euros to construct new fiber optic network in Castlebar, Co Mayo. The deployment of the network is scheduled to be finished by this year November.
The installation of telecom ducts, sub-ducts and fiber optic cables will be done across the town thus connecting major commercial and industrial zones, educational institutions and medical premises as well as sites for Government use. enet operates the Irish State’s Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) which has become known as regional Ireland’s fibre optic infrastructure. enet’s networks are capable of delivering cutting-edge communications and information services, such as super fast broadband, in 94 towns and cities throughout Ireland.
According to Enet, a number of businesses have already signalled their interest in connecting to the infrastructure. Mayo is the 3rd largest county in Ireland and Castlebar (gaelic Caisleán an Bharraigh) is the county town and also the administrative seat for the county. It is a busy bustling Market Town and is one of the fastest growing towns in the country.
This development is part of enet’s contract with the Irish Government to manage, maintain and operate two phases of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) program that is currently enabled across 94 towns and cities in Ireland. Castlebar also now joins six other Mayo towns as part of the MAN, including Ballina, Belmullet, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Kiltimagh and Knock.
The building of new high-speed broadband infrastructure is an important development for improving business potential, creating new export opportunities, and aiding job creation. The project announced by enet today is a vital step forward for Castlebar. enet network will be operated in an open-access model meaning that all service providers can have access to the network. Open access networks are shared networks by a pool of service providers. The success of this model is proven by the fact that all of Ireland’s telcos currently provide services via the open-access MANs.”
Mayo was recently designated the new high-speed link between Ireland and New York with the announcement of a €300m fibre optic cable link across the Atlantic Ocean.
