Oman Broadband Company (OBC) has signed an agreement with Omantel and Ooredoo at COMEX for use of fiber optic network infrastructures of OBC for providing broadband services in Oman. Speaking on the sidelines of the signing of agreements by Oman Broadband Company (OBC) with Omantel and Ooredoo at COMEX, Dr Al Futaisi said that OBC will not be limited to the Muscat area only, but will cover the entire Sultanate through optical fiber networks in the existing infrastructure projects like sewage water network, roads, and water connection.
The use of the OBC telecommunications network is part of the national strategy approved by the Council of Ministers for the development of broadband and the Internet. While doing so, OBC does not seek any profit since it is a government run company. OBC engaged in providing different telecom operators with the network at the same price.
The agreements are the beginning of real cooperation between the company and the licensed telecommunications operators in the Sultanate of Oman. OBC will enable the operators to use fiber optic networks created in the past years in the sewerage networks projects which will reach more than 100,000 units in the governorate of Muscat by the end of this year.
Speaking on the occasion of the OBC signing, Greg Young, CEO of Ooredoo, said, “As the CEO of Ooredoo, I am delighted to be here this morning to celebrate the signing of this agreement that is the culmination of a number of years of hard work by the various stakeholders involved.”
In Oman, the government-owned fiber optic networks managed by OBC represents an extremely important national asset that will now be made available to the people of Oman, to bring world-class broadband services to both consumers and businesses across Oman and to fulfill the ambitions and growth potential of this nation.
Ooredoo is looking forward with excitement to deliver state-of-the-art fixed fiber to the home in the second half of 2015 and the many exciting applications the network will enable.
