Why the cladding can not be removed from an silica glass optical fiber?

Cladding surrounds the core of an optical fiber. Why we can not remove the cladding from the core?

Both core and cladding are silica glass. Their difference is in refractive index. The difference in refractive index is not a physical separation, but a difference in their light propagation characteristics that is created by adding dopants in the core region. The raw material of optical fiber, that is preform is made by depositing silica and doping materials. Since both core and cladding are made of same material, they can not be separated.

On the other hand, you can separate the coating from the bare optical fiber. The coating material is UV-cured acrylate. Hope, the above explanation is good for your question.
