Prysmian Starts FlexTube Cable Production in Australia

Prysmian Group announced that their Australian cable manufacturing division will start the production of FlexTube cables. Prysmian FlexTube cable was originally designed in their Italian unit. Prysmian says their FlexTube cables, which have an innovative design will halve the cost of joining cables. The manufacturer hopes the new design will help NBN rollout as the broadband network deployment in Australia has been progressing.

The Italian-designed Prysmian FlexTube® line will be produced in Australia for the first time at the company’s world-class telecommunications facility at Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, which has the capacity to produce more than 600,000 fiber kilometers of the cabling each year, which is almost a third of the entire standard optical fiber cable market in Australia.

Prysmian CEO Australia & New Zealand Frederick Persson said the innovative cabling would transform the face of Australia’s telecommunication networks. Prysmian expects the FlexTube® to become the stranded optical cable of choice in the Australian telecom industry within the next three years, with the Dee Why factory’s capacity on track to exceed one million fiber kilometers by early 2019. The introduction of the FlexTube® is another first for Prysmian, as the company brought ribbon fiber manufacturing to Australia in 2012. Since then Prysmian has been the major supplier of fiber optic cables for the NBN.

Prysmian introduced the FlexTube design, not as an alternative to its Ribbon cable. The company says the FlexTube® cable is not intended as a direct replacement for ribbon fiber cables but its features will give network builders an innovative alternative. FlexTube cable design enables more fibers in a small size cable and reduced-size closures to fit in the ever-diminishing and increasingly costly remaining space in today’s underground duct networks.

The FlexTube® line will provide more options for network providers, as it significantly lowers the cost of building and owning networks, according to the company. Local network builders will have a dedicated in-region plant, and the ability to quickly meet the demand of providers since the manufacturing division is located near Sydney.

Prysmian Group is the worldwide leader in the production of optical cables, and one of the main producers of optical fiber. This addition to its manufacturing capabilities confirms the Group’s commitment to becoming the partner of choice for the main telecom operators, supporting them in the realization of some of their most important projects where the quality of products and innovative cabling solutions are fundamental.
