Qatar based telecommunication operator Ooredoo announces the launch of 1 Gigabit per second (1Gbps) broadband service over its fiber to the home (FTTH) network. By offering 1 Gbps, Ooredoo says they are the first in the country to offer such a high-speed broadband service. Ooredoo’s new service would allow its subscribers to download a 3o minute, the 4K quality movie in a matter of 3 minutes.
The importance of high-speed broadband services over fiber optic networks become significant when it comes to high-end applications and services such as online video streaming, high graphics online games, e-medical services, high-quality movie downloading etc. 1 Gigabit download speed would enable a customer to save a two-hour long movie from the source site to his/her computer in two minutes. Though these are theoretical calculations, the practical time would come near to the figures mentioned here.
Ooredoo was previously known as Q-Tel. Q-Tel Group (formerly Qtel) is an international telecommunications company headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Ooredoo provides mobile, wireless, wireline, and content services with market share in domestic and international telecommunication markets, and in business (corporations and individuals) and residential markets.
