The Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) Is searching for potential joint venture partners in the private sector for cooperation in its national fiber optic cable backbone.

MTL Chief Executive Officer Harry Gombachika said Thursday in the commercial city of Blantyre that his company wants prospective co-ownership of the network to provide a robust infrastructure to facilitate telecommunication services in the country.

MTL has the widest fiber optic network that the whole Malawi can benefit from based on its coverage. Therefore MLT wants to involve partners in the establishment of a private sector driven national fiber optic cable backbone that will offer services to other telecom players.

MTL Chief said the partnership will help bring down the cost of telecommunications and to act as an enabler to the enhancement of the economy by allowing other players in the telecommunication industry to co-own the fiber cable without having to waste the country’s forex resources to establish their own based network.

MTL fiber backbone is the only fiber network that links Malawi to the East African Submarine Cable System through Tanzania and Mozambique.

Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) is one of the largest telecommunications service providers in Malawi. It is based in Blantyre,Malawi’s finance and commerce capital. It is a joint venture between Telekom Malaysia and Malawi Telecommunications Limited.
