Furukawa Starts Mass Production of High-Output Pump Lasers

Furukawa Electric has started mass production of its enhanced version of high-output pump lasers (Optical Pumps). Commercial production of the FOL1439 series pump source lasers for Raman amplifiers with outstanding high output power and low electrical power consumption and the development of FRL1440 series high optical output pump lasers reinstates the maker’s commitment to the research and development of optical communication products.

The FOL1439 series, 1480nm-band Pump light source lasers have high optical output at low power consumption rates. FRL1440 series pump lasers make pumping possible with even higher outputs and lower power consumption.

Pump Lasers (Optical Pumps)

Pump Laser or Optical pump does excite the lower energy state electrons to a higher energy state. Optical pumps along with amplifiers extend the transmission distance of optical transmission through the fiber before the use of regenerators.

Optical pump lasers are key devices for use in Raman amplifiers. The demand for pump lasers operating at 1480nm is expected to increase as the telecommunications industry begins the full-scale adoption of ultra-high-speed optical communications at 400 Gbps.

In optical pumping light is used to excite the electrons from a lower energy state in an atom or molecule to a higher energy state This excitation is method is used in the construction of LASER. Optical pumping can be used to cyclically pump electrons bound within an atom or molecule to a well-defined quantum state.

In practice, completely coherent optical pumping may not occur due to power-broadening of the linewidth of a transition and undesirable effects such as hyperfine structure trapping and radiation trapping. Therefore the orientation of the atom depends more generally on the frequency, intensity, polarization, spectral bandwidth of the laser as well as the linewidth and transition probability of the absorbing transition.

As you know, the world is experiencing a data explosion and existing telecommunication network infrastructures have started experiencing their limit with the available high bit rate transmission. 40G is no more effective for a long haul. The dramatic increase in communications traffic is a result of the expansion of FTTx networks and wireless backbone networks.

The introduction of 5G will demand more from the wireless backbone and at the same time the spread of smartphones and spread of cloud computing, video streaming and social networks will demand a high bit rate transmission at the long-haul and metro-core networks. We were just talking about 100G, but now the trend is moving towards 400G and beyond.

There would be an upgrade to the high-speed optical transmission such as 100 Gbps, but that would not stop for the growth. Today’s high-speed is tomorrow’s medium speed and day-after tomorrow’s slow speed.

Furukawa estimates that there would be an increased demand for Raman amplifiers in order to improve the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) in the high-speed transmission sector. Raman amplifiers show excellent noise properties. Raman amplifiers use a 1400-1500 nm pump laser as an excitation light source. To achieve even higher performance, there are demands for higher optical output power and lower electrical power consumption.

Targeting this high bit-rate transmission market, Furukawa has recently begun the mass production of the new FOL1439 series, which has outstanding high optical output and low electrical power consumption characteristics. The maker also developed the FRL1440 series, for pumping with even higher optical output and lower electrical power consumption.

Description of FOL1439 and FOL1440 Series Pump Lasers

The current products are enhanced versions of the FOL1437 series pumps whose output is 500 mW at a maximum Power consumption of 13.5W.
FOL1439 series pump has an optical output 500mW at a maximum power consumption of 9W.

FOL1440 series pumps come in two versions; one with 500mW optical output and another with 600mW optical output.

FOL1439 offers a 33% and FOL1440 series offers a 45% reduction in electrical power consumption respectively.

Furukawa in a press release stated that its optical pumps can support high optical output operation as the FOL1439 series has a maximum optical output up to 600mW (Tcase = 70°C) and the FRL1440 has a maximum optical output up to 620mW (Tcase = 70°C).

Furukawa’s FOL1437, FOL1439 and 1440 series Optical pumps output wavelength ranging from 1420 to 1465nm with a wavelength accuracy of +/-1.5nm.
