Construction of the landing station for the Sunshine Coast Submarine Fiber Optic Cable System in Maud Street is progressing. The Sunshine Coast City Council had allocated a fund of US$4.67million for the cable landing station, which is the major land-based facility.
The project cost for the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Submarine Cable network is calculated at US$24.8million.
The City Council is enthusiastic that the submarine cable landing station, located at Maud Street, Maroochydore, will help deliver Australia’s fastest data and telecommunications connection to Asia from the east coast of Australia and the second fastest to the United States via an undersea fiber optic cable.
The Asia-Pacific submarine route is one of the busiest routes worldwide and many telcos are investing to build submarine cable systems either entirely own or on partnership. The landing station is part of the international cable network that will be delivered thanks to US$10.62million from the Queensland Government’s US$106.2million Jobs and Regional Growth Fund and US$14.16million from Sunshine Coast Council.
The Sunshine Coast Council plans to complete the new international submarine cable landing to southeast Queensland by 2020. Construction of this landing station will stimulate local business, generate new investment, and improve telecommunications diversity to Australia’s east coast.
Independent modeling forecasts that this cable will generate new investment in Queensland worth approximately US$657 apart from generating 864 new jobs. Cable laying project jobs may be temporary but the data center management and related ICT industries that would sprout would generate more telecommunication jobs in the region.
The Sunshine Coast International Broadband Submarine Cable Project is aligned to the Queensland region positioning itself as Australia’s leading smart city region.
It is believed that the submarine cable would be a game-changer that will transform the Sunshine Coast and open up enormous opportunities for the region and the discerning investor. The cable will put the Sunshine Coast on the international business map as a leading investment destination for commerce and industry.

The Sunshine Coast will deliver Australia’s fastest telecommunications connection to Asia and the second fastest to the United States from 2020. The new international submarine cable contract has been agreed between Sunshine Coast Council and RTI Connectivity Pty Ltd (RTI-C).
Queensland businesses will, for the first time, be able to bypass Sydney and connect directly internationally. This will provide business with a range of new opportunities that come with increased speed and diversity.
The new fiber connectivity will give major data-intensive companies such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft the opportunity to revisit the benefits of where they locate their Australian investments.
The project includes 550 kilometers of submarine fiber optic cable that will connect the Sunshine Coast to the 9,600 kilometer-long Japan-Guam-Australia-South (JGA-S) submarine cable.
For the local community, the project will, over time, lead to faster, more affordable broadband access and stimulate investment that will create hundreds of new jobs. The Sunshine Coast submarine cable project well and truly marks us as Australia’s healthy, smart, creative region.
Construction Partner
The Sunshine City council announced Vertiv as the construction partner for the cable landing station located 44 Maud Street Maroochydore. The decision was taken in November 2018.
Construction
The construction has begun on site and it is expected to be completed by late August 2019.
Later in 2019 construction will begin of the beach manhole and horizontal direction drilling – under the beach dune and out approximately 700m offshore to allow for the installation of the submarine cable towards the end of the year.
Connecting the cable landing station to the beach manhole will be a duct network to be constructed in April-June 2019.
