British Telecomm’s engneering subsidiary, Openreach plans for Fiber to the Premise deployment in Greater Glasgow in Scotland.. Greater Glasgow is the 25th area where Openreach deploys its fiber to the premises. The company targets to connect the premises in 2019 with an aim to reach three million homes and businesses with “full fibre” by the end of 2020.
The Chief Executive of Openreach, Clive Selley said that his company is ambitious for the UK and is determined to build full fibre as quickly as possible to ensure the country to have a reliable broadband network capable of supporting future data-hungry services and applications essential for boosting productivity and sustaining our position as a leading digital economy.
He further updated the progresses that Openreach makes in deploying optical fibre cables in the UK.and told that Openreach will recruit 3,000 new trainee engineers in 2019. Among the 3,000 vacancies, 220 posts would be to serve Scotland. These new recruits in Scotland would play a crucial role in ‘full fibre’ programme.
The Scottish Government Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills Jamie Hepburn emphasized his Government’s committment to improving the country’s digital infrastructure by encouraging inward investment and employment opportunities to inclusive growth. He also welcomed the long term investment in the Scottish workforce by Openreach and the capital investment being undertaken at its Livingston training facility.”
In addition to parts of Greater Glasgow, the other locations where Openreach will be building FTTP networks during 2019 are Bury, Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Croydon, Harrow, Merton, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton Coldfield and Salford, with the company on-track to deliver its commitment of reaching three million homes and businesses with ‘full fibre’ broadband by the end of 2020.
Please note that Fibre to the Premise is not Fiber to the Home. In a Fibre to the Home network, the opticla fibre needs to deploy to the subscriber’s home. In FTTP (Fibre to the Premise), the fibre gets terminated in a premise area from where several houses would be connected through the copper cables. To achieve this, the service providers make use of the existing (already available) copper cables, though which many of them provide DSL, ADSL services.
Openreach’s Fibre to the premises (FTTP) or ‘full fibre’ broadband connections can deliver download speeds of up to 1Gigabit per second (Gps) – enough bandwidth for a family of four to all stream ultra HD or 4k quality movies or TV simultaneously, without interruptions, waiting or buffering. Downloading a typical HD film would take less time than it takes to make a cup of tea. Ultrafast broadband according to Openreach, is the services with speeds in excess of 100 Megabits per second (Mbps). In order to understand it better; a typical HD Netflix video stream requires around 5 Megabits per second.
Openreach will build to thousands of homes and businesses in these locations in the first phase, helping to deliver a total of 3m fibre connections across the UK by the end of 2020.
Openreach plans to publish details of its buildout plans for the next 12 months in its website. The details will including the total number of exchange areas to be reached in each location. The company will update this information every three months.
