India’s incumbent telecommunication service provider, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has connected the Kangra and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh with fiber optic cables. The operator announced its readiness to serve the potential subscribers in the districts with high-speed broadband services. Customers now can enjoy fiber to the home (FTTH) services from BSNL.
BSNL has been consistently putting its efforts to connect the Indian villages and remote places where other private players may not show interest due to concerns on Return of Investment. Considering the limitations of the operator, the Central Government in 2010 had instructed the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to make a National fiber optic plan and a separate vehicle for its implementation. Successive Governments in India have supported and taken the project to a new level to speed up the deployments.
The Digital India dream of the current Central Government aims to connect the rural mass with high-speed broadband irrespective of the broadband technology being used to achieve the goal. Policy makers in India are aware of the practical difficulties in putting fibre everywhere.
Kangra is the most populous district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh with Dharamshala as its administrative headquarters. It is the home of the Masrur Temples, also known as the Himalayan Pyramids. Chamba is a neighboring district of Kangra. The towns of Dalhousie, Khajjhiar and Churah Valley are popular hill stations and vacation spots for the people from the plains of northern India
General Manager of BSNL, Dharamsala, Pradeep Singh: For making the project successful and to provide good service to the consumers, the project had been outsourced to private operators. The traditional communication system was being carried through copper wires, which had its shortcomings and had a maximum speed of 20 MB. Breaking of the copper wire and stealing of copper wires was a hindrance in providing an uninterrupted broadband and telephone service through traditional system. Now, the Fiber to Home service would be the most viable alternative to the traditional system.
3G and EVDO mobile broadband services are available in Kangra. Very few companies offer internet services in Kangra. There are four companies offering internet services. BSNL, Reliance, Vodafone, and Airtel offers 3G services.
BSNL’s FTTH system would provide a speed of 1,000Mbps with high-quality voice call facility and high-speed internet. Since fiber optic network is not affected by lightning, and electricity, the FTTH system can deliver seamless services to the subscribers. With BSNL FTTH in place, the residents and businesses in the districts of Kangra and Chamba can connect with the rest of the world.
