Fiber Distribution Point Terminals are points where the Fiber Distribution Point Closure, the associated organizer and optical components are assembled and installed. Distribution cable used in the access section of the network gets terminated at fiber distribution point terminals, from where the drop cables to individual subscribers will start.
The Fiber Distribution Point Terminal (FDPT) is intended for use in the Single Dwelling Unit (SDU). Fiber distribution point terminal can be underground or overhead. The required properties of the terminal closures and components will vary depending on whether it is aerial or underground.
A fiber distribution point terminal can be installed in outside plant environment for example in handhole or manhole. Also it can also be used as free standing. Another scenario is to install the fiber distribution point terminals on posts or poles or on the overhead wire itself.
The basic function of FDPT is to provide a Fiber Distribution Point (FDP) between the distribution cable and the customer service cable. The FDPT must be waterproof as they are installed in outside environment. In addition to facilitating the storing and movement of the closure during craft access, to prevent fiber damage.
The FDPT can be fed by a cable directly from an exchange or a distribution splice. The FDTP will provide connector terminations for accommodating the designated customer locations. This type of arrangement requires a splice organizer tray along with adequate protection for the fiber splices in the form of a protective enclosure inside the FDPT.
