Orange Espana has announced the expansion of its fiber-optic broadband services to Merida, the capital of the western central Extremadura region. The telecom operator plans to invest 3.4 million euros in order to bring the next generation telecommunication services to the region.
It is estimated that approximately 20,200 households and business units will get the benefit from the expansion plans by Orange Espana. This is equivalent to 94 percent of households in the region. Most of the potential subscribers in the region will get connected to the fiber-to-the-home networks that will be deployed by Orange. The operator has plans to provide full coverage of the region with fiber optic networks by the end of this year.
Orange Espana last year announced a 40 percent expansion to its fiber-optic deployment plans in Spain, committing to reach an additional 4 million households by the end of 2020 on top of the target of 10 million households by the end of 2016.
The operator plans an overall investment of 1.5-1.7 billion euros to bring fiber-optic broadband services to more than 80 percent of towns with over 20,000 inhabitants.
