Finisar Corporation Expands Malaysian Operations

The U.S based leading technology firm Finisar Corporation is all set to take advantage of the demand for fiber optic products globally by expanding their manufacturing in Malaysia. Finisar will invest a further RM400 million (Malaysian Ringgit), which comes to approximately US$ 95.11 million to expand its Malaysian operations in Perak. The company had invested US$ 160 million in Perak until now. Bordering Kedah and Thai Yalah in the north, Perak is the fourth largest and one o of the 13 states of Malaysia.

Finisar is the biggest employer among multinational companies operating in the region and has been contributing to the overall development of the economy directly and indirectly. Around 7,000 people are working for Finisar and this makes the company the biggest employer in Perak. Finisar contributes 25 percent of Perak’s manufacturing GDP and five percent of Perak GDP. About 50 percent of the overall workforce is working in the Perak factory. The total global workforce is around 14,000.

Finisar finds Malaysia as a good investment location in terms of good workers, loyal workers, stable employment, easy trade, good infrastructure, good communication infrastructure, and weather. There is no shut down due to strike or power failure. No threat from volcano or earthquake. Finisar has manufacturing locations in Eastern Europe as well.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was in San Francisco recently, met the executive chairman and CEO of Finisar, Mr. Jerry Rawls on the sidelines of a US-Malaysia business luncheon. During that meeting, the Prime Minister handed over MIDA’s approval letter for additional investments to Rawls. The Prime Minister said that Finisar is the biggest company in Perak in terms of workers. The new expansion will require further 250 workers. The current investment for expansion will bring total Finisar investments in Malaysia to RM1 billion and will generate returns on investments of RM38.5 billion in 10 years. Finisar has provided critical optics technologies to system manufacturers to meet the increasing demands for network bandwidth. Finisar initially had only 40 workers when it started operation in Chemor in 2001, which has reached to 7,000 and now to support the current expansion, the company need to recruit more. Finisar is expected to expand its 100,000 square feet plant in Chemor.
