Aramid yarns serve as the strength member in optical fiber cable. In optical fiber cable, the central strength member alone sometimes can not fulfill the tensile force requirement. The installation conditions of optical fiber cable may demand more pulling tension. To meet the desired pulling force, peripheral strength members can be added.
Usually, these peripheral strength members are added over the stranded core and below the inner sheath. In the case of All dielectric self supporting (ADSS) cables, peripheral strength members are commonly employed under the outer sheath and over the inner sheath. Generally, Aramid yarns form a layer over the inner sheath.
Nowadays, to meet the tensile strength requirements, Aramid yarns are used in duct cables also. Aramid yarns are high quality peripheral strength members that offer easy application during the manufacturing of optical fiber cables.
Aramid yarn servers are used in the cable manufacturing process. The server capacity varies from 24 numbers to 48 in most cases. 24 numbers of Aramid yarns are not enough in some ADSS cable designs. In such cases, cable manufacturers use high modulus high denier Aramid yarns.
The unit to express Aramid yarn type is denier or dtex. Some of the most common types of Aramid yarns come as 1610 dtex, 3200 dtex, 8400 dtex etc. The difference between dtex and denier is very simple. The weight of 9000 meters of Aramid yarn is a denier and the weight of 10,000 meters of Aramid yarn is dtex. If the dtex of Aramid yarn is 1610dtex, the meaning is the weight of 10,000 meters of 1610 dtex yarn is 1610 grams. The final calculation is the weight of 1 km of that yarn will be 0.1610 kg.
Two of the most widely used products of Aramid are yarns and ripcords. Aramid ripcords can rip off the corrugated steel tape and the surrounding outer sheath also. Thus Aramid ripcords having smaller diameter can be used to rip off the armored cable outer sheaths.
Aramid yarns are basically nylons. The linear strength of Aramid yarns is superior compared to other peripheral strength members. Some of the world famous Aramid yarn suppliers are Dupont, Teijin, Kolon, etc. Dupont’s trade name Kevlar has almost become a synonym for the Aramid yarn. Kevlar is a widely used Aramid yarn.
Teijin’s Aramid yarn is known as Twaron in the fiber optic cable industry. Kolon, a South Korean company also makes Aramid yarn and their brand is Heracron. DS Cable Materials, South Korea is also another supplier of Aramid yarns and Aramid yarn ripcords.
To summarize, the list of suppliers for Aramid yarn products are;
Dupont
Teijin
Kolon
DS Cable Materials
