ZTE Establishes ITU’s First Standard for Unidentified Network Threat Detection

Chinese telecom solutions provider, ZTE Corporation has initiated for an international standard for ‘Unidentified Network Threat Detection and Defense System. The press release published in the supplier’s site stated that they have established an international standard project for unidentified network threat detection and defense at the SG17 Plenary Meeting of Telecommunication Standardization Sector of International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva, Switzerland.

ZTE is one of the major international providers of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, not only in China but worldwide. The project for unidentified network threat detection is ITU-T’s first standard project in the field of threat detection and prevention. ITU-T has standardized recommendations for optical fiber network monitoring, but a threat detection system is new to the standardization.

The first ITU standard project for unidentified network threat detection and defense will become one of the core foundations for the network and telecommunications field to deal with advanced network threats and attacks. More importantly, it has laid the foundation for the unidentified threat defense of other related standard researches, such as the spam defense technology based on dynamic behavior detection, unidentified threats detection and defense in 5G end-to-end telecommunications networks as well as in the IoT scenario.

ITU is highly concerned with the field of Advanced Persistent Threat. Since August 2018, ITU has been involved in two seminars on Advanced Persistent Threat, inviting the industry experts to explore defense and detection solutions to advanced threats and attacks. In January 2019, ITU conducted another in-depth study on the applications and risks of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the field of security.

What is ITU-T Study Group 17 (ITU-T SG17)?
Cybersecurity is a concern worldwide. It is necessary to implement international standards to augment the growth of e-business.

The study group, SG17 coordinates security-related work across all other telecom study groups within the ITU. SG17 deals with a broad range of standardization issues such as cybersecurity, security management; security architectures and frameworks, countering spam, identity management, the protection of personally identifiable information, and the security of applications and services for the Internet of Things (IoT), smart grid, smartphones, software-defined networking (SDN), web services, big data analytics, social networks, cloud computing, mobile financial systems, IPTV and telebiometrics.

ITU-T X.509 has been implemented that deals with electronic authentication over public networks. ITU-T X.509 is used in a wide range of applications such as securing the connection between a browser and a server on the web, providing digital signatures that enable e-commerce transactions to be conducted with the same confidence as in a traditional system etc. SG17 also coordinates security standardization work covering combating counterfeit and mobile device theft, IMT-2020, cloud-based event data technology, e-health, open identity trust framework, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and Child Online Protection.
